DECISION TO ASSIGN COUNSEL TO CHARLES GHANKAY TAYLOR

 

THE DEFENCE LEGAL OFFICER.

 

CONSIDERING the Statute of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone and in particular Article 23 thereof;

CONSIDERING the Rules of Procedure and Evidence as adopted by the plenary meeting of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone as amended on the 4th December
2013

CONSIDERING the Directive on the Assignment of Counsel of the Special Court as adopted by the Registrar on the 1 October 2003 and in particular Article 13 thereof;

CONSIDERING that Charles Ghankay Taylor is presently in the United Kingdom for purposes of his sentence enforcement imposed by the Special Court upon the conclusion of both his trial and appeal:

CONSIDERING that Mr. Taylor is desirous of appointing Mr. John Jones QC as his private Counsel and has done so by way of a power of attorney in which he requests Mr. Jones to represent him in all matters concerning his transfer to serve his sentence of imprisonment imposed by the Special Court for Sierra Leone in the United Kingdom or elsewhere and to also represent him before the Residual Special Court and make all filings thereof:

CONSIDERING that Mr. John Jones meets the requirements for assignment of Counsel as set out in Rule 45 of the Rules of Procedure and Evidence of the Residual Special court for Sierra Leone:

CONSIDERING that the Defence Legal Officer of the Residual Special Court for Sierra
Leone may assign Counsel in the interests of justice, to represent a Convict

CONSIDERING that Mr. John Jones QC has indicated his willingness represent Mr. Taylor at no cost to the Residual Special Court:

HEREBY DIRECTS the assignment of Mr. John Jones QC as Counsel to Mr. Charles
Taylor as of the 25th April2014
